Down-to-earth, super-personable - with a love of all things automotive and a strong work ethic - Bob Henderson brings so much to customers and colleagues here at Ruge’s Ford.
As Parts Manager, Bob says he’s especially grateful that the pandemic is in the rearview mirror, having navigated the challenges of supply chain issues during the global health crisis. “Although those challenges still exist, things are much better now and we do our best to get our customers everything they need in a timely manner.” That same spirit of gratitude carries over into conversations about what it’s like to live in his home region and work for a family-owned business.
Bob, tell us about your background.
I’m originally from Kingston, where I attended high school and first discovered how much I enjoy cars. I have always loved riding ATV’s and off-road vehicles - there was a sand pit by my house, and I’ve got a lot of fun memories from that.
What is it like to build your adult life in the region where you grew up?
It’s very cool. I even bought the house I grew up in from my mom. The house is old and definitely a work in progress, but I enjoy it and really love this area.
What inspired you to pursue this career path?
My uncle had a 1970 Chevelle Convertible and I just fell in love with that car, and it grew from there. I would tinker with cars whenever I had the chance, from the time I was in my early teens.
As Ruge’s Parts Manager, what is your day-to-day like?
Every morning, orders come in; we check everything in, get things tagged, and notify the service department and customers that the parts they need are ready. Our goal is to make sure everything is organized so that we can service our customers as quickly as possible. We just do the best we can every day.
What do you most love about working for Ruge’s?
They are a great family and treat their employees well. I feel very lucky to be working here - and really like that it is only about 25 minutes from my home over the river!
What is the one feature on Ford vehicles that customers shouldn’t live without?
Everyone should have the remote start! It makes things so convenient and comfortable, whatever the season. I have a 2012 truck with remote start - when it’s hot out, I can get the air conditioning going and cool it off before I get inside - and I can do the opposite for winter by starting it ahead of time and heating it up. It’s the best.
If you could take a road trip anywhere, where would you go and what vehicle would you choose?
I would take a road trip to California in a Ford Mustang GT 500; it’s fast, has good handling, is super-charged, and would be so much fun to drive all the way to the other side of the country.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I am spending a lot of time fixing up the old house so that keeps me busy when I’m not working.
