The Explorer Has Had Your Back
The Ford Explorer is a three-row SUV that is one of the most popular models in its vehicle class. However, it didn't start out that way. Ford introduced the Explorer in 1991 as a four-door SUV designed as an option for drivers who wanted a roomier model than the two-door Bronco. With a body-on-frame design, the Explorer rode on the same suspension and undercarriage as a Ford Ranger pickup truck. However, it gave you more interior space than a Bronco or Ranger, with the Explorer capable of seating up to six passengers in its two rows of seats. It was also powered by a V6 gas engine with a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The Explorer came with standard rear-wheel drive, although a push-button activated four-wheel drive system was offered as an available option.
By the time of the second generation Explorer, Ford had moved some of its design elements from the boxy look of the original Explorer to a more rounded and aerodynamic design. In addition, the 1996 Explorer that commenced the second generation featured a larger V8 gas engine. This gave drivers improved performance. The second generation also saw the introduction of a two-door model called the Explorer Sport. However, this model was discontinued after the 2003 model year. Instead, Ford went with a pickup truck version of the model called the Ford Explorer Sport Trac. In some ways, this made sense since the Explorer was built on a Ranger truck frame. This variant actually lasted for the rest of the decade as an option for Explorer drivers.
With the third generation of the Explorer, Ford started to signal the future direction of the model. Gone was the Ranger frame, replaced with one specifically designed for the Explorer. In addition, by 2002, all Explorer models offered a third row of seats as an option. This allowed drivers to seat up to seven passengers, increasing the market for the Ranger, as many larger families could now consider driving one as a primary vehicle.
The 2006 Explorer saw the vehicle become safer and even more aerodynamic. The safety came in the form of new canopy airbags to shield passengers in the event of a collision. This fourth-generation model also saw Ford bring back the V6 engine option for the Explorer, which had been discontinued after 1995. Automatic transmissions came standard with the fourth-generation Explorer, regardless of which engine you chose.
The greatest leap forward in the development of the Explorer may have occurred with the introduction of the fifth-generation Explorer in 2011. Gone were the body-on-frame design, the boxy appearance, the standard rear-wheel drive, and the V8 gas engine. With the 2011 Explorer, Ford went with a safer unibody design on a model noted for its more rounded, modern appearance. This was also the first Explorer to come with front-wheel drive, although four-wheel drive remained an available option. This gave the Explorer capabilities that rival all-wheel drive models could only dream about. Each model also featured one of two different V6 gas engines, including a turbocharged version to improve overall performance. Finally, three rows of seats now came standard, allowing anyone driving an Explorer to be able to seat up to seven passengers.
The fifth-generation model of the Explorer was so successful that it lasted for an entire decade. However, Ford was not content to rest on its laurels and introduced a sixth generation of the Explorer in 2020. This three-row SUV stepped into the future in many ways, giving the Explorer a more rugged appearance with a choice of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. Moreover, there have been a number of different powertrains to choose from with the sixth-generation Explorer, including an economical I-4, a sporty V6, and an efficient hybrid.
Probably the biggest advance during the fifth and sixth generations of the Explorer has been in technology. Ford introduced the Co-Pilot360 driver assistance system initially as an option before making it standard on all models. Similarly, the Ford SYNC infotainment system is featured on all models of the Explorer, allowing you to connect your smartphones using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to make hands-free calls and texts.
Over the years, the Ford Explorer has always stood out as one of the best three-row SUVs. Its ruggedness and dependability make it a great choice to stand up to whatever weather has to dish out. This is especially true if you choose one with available four-wheel drive. This will also come in handy if you want to go exploring around the Catskills or take an afternoon trip to Ferncliff Forest. As a result, the Explorer has always matched up well with other leading three-row midsize SUVs like the Chevy Traverse, Toyota Highlander, and Honda Pilot. Not only is it roomy, but it also has plenty of space for passengers and cargo. The Explorer is also ruggedly built, so it is ideal for drivers in this part of the country.
